Diabetes Sufferers Can Eat Fruits In Moderation

Can diabetic patients eat fruits? This is a question most diabetic patients are worried and confused about. Family members of diabetes patients will often not allow them to eat anything which is even slightly sweet. As such, they are kept away from eating fruits.

You would be glad to know the answer to the above question is .... absolutely yes! People suffering from diabetes can in fact eat fruits like other people. However they should be mindful of 1 important thing. Diabetic patients should treat themselves with fast acting insulin for the carbohydrates which they ate.

For example, if someone suffering from diabetes has some sweets or candy, then they should try to give themselves a shot for the amount of carbohydrates which they consumed. The main difference between other people and diabetic sufferers is that instead of the pancreas producing insulin to handle sugar in the food, diabetic patients have to rely on needle or pump.

So a diabetic patient can let himself enjoy fruits, sweets and other such stuff. But stay within control and remember to treat yourself with insulin for whatever you have eaten.

There are some fruits which diabetic patients can opt for like fiber rich foods. Foods which are rich in fiber have low glycemic index(GI), so there isn't too much spike in blood sugar levels. The fiber in these foods slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. Some of the examples of fiber rich fruits are - apples, apricots, pomegranates, avocados and blueberries among others.

Diabetic patients should be careful about eating fruits which have high amount of glucose as the blood sugar levels may spike after eating those. But you can still enjoy them as part of a planned diabetic meal plan if you are careful and take advice from your doctor. Diabetic patients should also try to avoid canned fruits as well as dry fruits as both of these can contain high sugar content.

Bananas, dates, oranges, grapes etc have high level of sugar and glucose levels.

Type 2 Diabetes Major Symptoms

It is the most common form of diabetes seen in people. It constitutes up to 90 percent of diabetes cases. The major cause of this kind of diabetes is diet. The symptoms of adult onset diabetes are very difficult to notice and most of the times a person feel him /her not suffering from any kind of disease.

It is to people who are above 40 years and above and insulin is not a must dose over here so it is known by the name non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Here the body creates resistance to insulin which is commonly known as insulin resistance.

In insulin resistance the body creates more and more insulin which in turn develops resistance to itself and there is low production in insulin.

Diabetes is mainly classified into two types Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is also known by the names early onset diabetes and juvenile diabetes. It is common to children and teenagers.

Unlike type 1 diabetes, adult onset diabetes can be controlled and avoided if proper well balanced diet is taken. The diet should be rich in fiber content. Examples of fruits and vegetables rich in fiber are apple, apricot, amla, dates , broccoli.

Stagnated kind of lifestyle is one of the main cause of diabetes. Physical activity is must in life. Physical activity include running, jogging, skipping, swimming. Layouts of gym may not be necessary

Another important type of diabetes is gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is to women during second half of pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes are at a risk of having large babies. The good point is that gestational diabetes may last only for short interval of time i.e. up to delivery if proper care is taken by the mother. On the other hand it may lead to type 2 diabetes.

The Adult onset diabetes symptoms are
  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Numbness in hands and feet
  • Increased hunger
  • Poor wound healing
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Unclear vision

In higher complications it may lead to heart attack, strokes, and a condition known as hyperglycemia. It may also cause coma and death.

Diabetes Diagnosis And Cure

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition where the body is unable to regulate the amount of glucose in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is mainly due to the acceptors of the cells not responding to the insulin or when there is too little insulin in the body. Insulin is a hormone secreted by pancreas, a gland present behind the stomach.

Type 2 diabetes is usually due to obesity or being over weight. Here the insulin is not a must so it known as insulin independent diabetes mellitus. Glucose in present in the foods and sugary drinks and is absorbed as a part of digestion. One of the major function of blood is to carry glucose to all parts of the body. Where it is stored in the muscles cells as energy.

Pancreas contains group of cells which are called as islet of langerhans among which the beta cells are responsible for secretion of insulin. In type 2 the pancreas develops a resistance to insulin production which is commonly as insulin resistance.

among the causes of diabetes family history plays a vital role.
  • Excessive urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Tiredness
  • blurred vision
  • Itchy skin around genitals i.e. Infections

There may be also changes in weight. Some people may have gained weight while some others may have lost weight due high blood sugar levels.

If diabetes left untreated or ignored it leads to serious complications like heart attack, angina, stroke, diabetic kidney damage, diabetic foot ulcers, diabetic eye damage.

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes develop slowly and most of times a person is unaware of suffering with the disease.

The major causes of type 2 diabetes are :
  1. Being overweight
  2. No Physical activity
  3. Family history
  4. Smoking
  5. Drinking alcohol
  6. Due to race, i.e. African Caribbean, south asian or Hispanic origin.
  7. Heart attack or stroke
  8. Diabetes diagnosis

Diabetes diagnosis is done by two tests i.e. blood test and urine test. In blood test the blood glucose level is checked. Blood test is also done at fasting the person. Urine test is done to check whether there are samples of glucose in urine or not.

Diabetes is due to changes in lifestyle. It can also be maintained by bringing changes in lifestyle. Sedentary kind of lifestyle leads to diabetes.

Among changes in lifestyle avoiding smoking and avoiding drinking of alcohol are prominent. Diabetic persons need to take diet rich in fiber and low in simple carbohydrates.

Diabetes Types And Natural Remedies

Initially it was thought that diabetic people need to follow a specific diet but later learning more about it revealed that diabetic people can eat all foods by following specific guidelines. Like avoiding carbohydrates. So people with diabetes need to follow specific guidelines in place of specific diet.

The guide line is

Taking fruits and vegetables that are dark in color such as red, yellow, orange, blue, purple and green. Researchers had concluded that the colorful fruits and vegetables contain essential nutrients , powerful antioxidants, minerals , fiber, vitamin which can promote good health and give us a sense of wellness.

Some of the important fruits and vegetables which help to control diabetes are

Apples, Tomatoes, strawberries, guava, broccoli, cabbage, sweet potatoes, carrot, apricot, blue and blackberries, pineapples, oranges, pears, sprouts, beans, papaya and aborigines.

Diabetes is due to high blood glucose levels in the blood. This high glucose level is due to absence or low quantity of insulin in the body. Insulin a hormone secreted by pancreas. Pancreas is gland present behind the stomach.

Diabetes is mainly classified into two types namely type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is to young adults and teenagers mainly so it is called as juvenile diabetes or early onset diabetes. In type 1 diabetes there is halt in production of insulin which is due to autoimmune system of the body which destroys the pancreas beta cells. That is why this type is also called auto immune disease.

Type 2 diabetes is mainly to adults of age 40 and above. So it is called as adult onset diabetes. In type 2 diabetes the acceptors of the cells stop reacting to the insulin produced and due to this the pancreas create more and more insulin vigorously and develops a resistance to itself which is called as insulin resistance.

The other major type of diabetes is gestational diabetes which is to women during the second phase of pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes are at risk of having large babies. The good thing about gestational diabetes is that it last only till the delivery if proper care is taken by the mother. In ignored cases it leads to type 2 diabetes.
